About Neighborhood News
Neighborhood News is a micro-local community newspaper with 11 community-specific editions distributed by Pioneer Publishing to 255,000 homes throughout the metropolitan area every month. In addition to our monthly print publications we have launched MetroNeighborhoodNews.com where you can check in every Wednesday for weekly updates in your neighborhood and even add a few yourself.
Publisher: John Heaston
John Heaston founded Neighborhood News and its online equivalent MetroNeighborhoodNews.com in September 2009, with the inaugural editions presented to the public in January 2010. In addition to Neighborhood News, John is also a co-founder and publisher of The Reader, Omaha's oldest Arts and Entertainment Newsweekly, publisher of El Perico, Omaha's only bilingual newspaper and Today's Omaha Woman, a quarterly magazine dedicated to educating people about issues impacting women and girls in our community. He is also a longtime community activist and supporter of many causes. When he isn't bouncing from one idea to the next he is probably attending a nephew's guitar lesson or a family brunch. He is a life-long resident of Omaha, Nebraska.
Executive Editor: Summer Miller
Summer Miller is the Executive Editor of Neighborhood News and MetroNeighborhoodNews.com. She is an award winning journalist whose work has appeared in Newsday, Every Day with Rachel Ray, Eating Well, AAA Living and more websites than room to note. In her former life, she spent time as a public relations manager where she and her team won industry awards for social media campaigns, a humanitarian aid worker in South Africa and editor in chief of The Reader. She is a life-long resident of the metro area. She currently lives in a city formerly known as Elkhorn with her husband, Steve, their son, Jackson, and their homicidal cat named Cat.

David WilliamsA familiar byline in such publications as Omaha Magazine, The Encounter, and B2B Magazine, David Williams is formerly the performing arts critic for the Omaha City Weekly, where he commented on theater, opera, dance, the spoken word and just about anything else that involved creative people illuminated by footlights or baby spots. Now found covering the same beat on the pages of The Reader, he spent more than two decades of a bygone millennium working for a Fortune 500 technology firm before becoming a scribe. Also an artist, he is a frequent contributor to shows at the internationally acclaimed Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, where he once worked in public relations. Williams is the communications coordinator for Pioneer Publishing, which includes his role as managing editor for Neighborhood News.

Gini Magnuson is a copy-editor for the Neighborhood News and MetroNeighborhoodNews.com. She is a brokerage compliance analyst, wildlife rehabilitator, devoted backpacker and chronic volunteer. Gini and her husband, Eric, live in beautiful Dundee with their cat-like dog, Inga.

Carrie Kentch is the Sales Manager of Neighborhood News and Pioneer Publishing. She has a long history working in print media and did tours of duty with the local dailies, Omaha World Herald and Daily Nonpareil. Working with businesses to create effective marketing plans is her passion and she has successfully worked with hundreds of metro businesses. She’s a board member for the Omaha Restaurant Association and committee member for the Women’s Fund of Greater Omaha and Women in Media and Marketing, she has also served as a board member or volunteer for the Omaha Federation of Advertising, Girls Incorporated and the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference. Carrie is a Bensonite (GO BUNNIES!) and spends her time outside of work on the sidelines of her daughters’ sporting events or chauffeuring them about town.

Sally DeskinsSally Deskins is the community editor for the West Edition where she also lives with her husband John and their children May and Henry. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in studio art and a Master of Public Administration in nonprofit management from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Omaha respectively, she worked in local nonprofits fundraising and events planning before coming to the writing staff of The Reader in 2006. She teaches Grant Writing and Arts Administration at Metropolitan Community College and has a special interest in arts policy and creativity in communities. She contributed to the 2007 Peter Kiewit-funded project, “The Economic Impact of Omaha Performing Arts” and an upcoming publication with Review of Regional Studies for her and her husband’s article, “Does State Arts Spending Affect State Economic Activity?” Her passion is community, and through her writing with Neighborhood News West, she hopes to help unite neighbors and introduce inspiring stories of those right around your corner.

Brandon VogelBrandon Vogel is a freelance writer living above an old grocery store in the heart of Midtown. While still in college his writing career began with Xpressnews.com, an online only newspaper in Alliance, NE. After completing his MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College, Brandon began writing freelance stories for various publications. His work has been featured in Everywhere magazine, BostonNow, various publications from Maple Street Press, FOXSports.com, and MSN.com.

Trinity MooreTrinity Moore is a long-time admirer of the written word. An English literature education carried her through her professional work experience as a technical editor and marketing supervisor at a national engineering firm. Her more recent work is published on Examiner.com where she writes about local events and frugal living. As a mother of two young children, Trinity spends her time playing with her family, staying involved in her neighborhood and church, and tracking down community happenings for Neighborhood News. Growing up on a 100-square-mile cattle ranch thirty minutes from town, she has experienced life in the most rural of settings, however she has spent the majority of her adult life living in the city. She melds her childhood love of ranch life with her recent 10-year acclimation to city dwelling to bring you meaningful accounts of life on the southwestern fringe of Omaha, Elkhorn and Gretna.

Tess SykesTess Sykes is the community editor for the South Sarpy Edition. After receiving her bachelor's degree in Journalism from UNL, she spent eight years as a writer, editor and photographer for weekly and daily newspapers in Nebraska and Colorado, including the Lincoln Journal-Star, Pagosa Springs SUN and the Aurora News Register. She is married with two kids and enjoys reading, leading a kid's choir at church and dancing with her husband.
