OPS Announces Open House Schedules

The Omaha Public School district has announced its open house schedule to its area high schools and magnet schools for inquiring parents and prospective students. The open house events provide students and parents a opportunity to tour the buildings; meet with teachers, coaches and counselors; and learn about the extracurricular activities and groups available. These events are also a chance for prospective students from other districts to inquire about transferring. Here are some safety tips to consider before you hit or host your New Year's Eve party: -If you are planning to light off fireworks, make sure you are not intoxicated. New Year’s Fireworks for Sale in Papillion

Some wind has entered the forecast and a 50 percent chance of rain Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service forcast, but with daytime temps expected to reach 54 F tomorrow and 37 on Sunday, chances are better than not that area fireworks stands will see better results the second year following the Nebraska Legislature's move to allow fireworks sales for three days surrounding New Years. Omaha does not allow fireworks sales, but Papillion, Gretna, Waterloo, Springfield and Eagle do. Both Bellevue and Omaha allow fireworks to be set off during the holiday. Vendors can sell all fireworks allowed under federal law with the exception of rockets on sticks, including bottle rockets. Great volunteers are what make our community organizations thrive. And in 2011, there were many outstanding people who gave of their time and themselves to improve their spot of the world. Here we highlight a few from the northwest Omaha area: Jody Blakely, Vice President, Omaha Dog Park Advocates Jody Blakely got involved with the Omaha Dog Park Advocates, which helps run Hefflinger and Hanscom dog parks in Omaha, after enjoying Hefflinger Dog Park with her own three Standard Poodles. “We liked it, and I thought, ‘What can I do to help?’” she said. After attending some meetings, Blakely became the co-secretary of the organization, and now serves as the vice president. It's never too busy for a scam. With the rush of the holidays in full force, it's important to slow down enough to remember to watch over personal identification information and be alert to scams on the way through town ... always naughty and never nice. According to an OPPD release, a number of customers in the metropolitan area have recently reported being approached by strangers falsely claiming to work for the power company. "The Omaha Public Power District is reminding customers to be leery of scam artists, pretending to be OPPD employees demanding money or personal information," Mike Jones, senior media specialist with the company, said. Brick House Closed, Joe’s Crab Shack to Come

After being open for less than a year, the Brick House Tavern near Westroads Mall closed this week, according to the Omaha World-Herald. The Brick House Tavern and Tap, 701 N 102nd St., was located in the old Macaroni Grill building. Reportedly, a Joe's Crab Shack will fill the space. The new restaurant is set to open in the spring. Postage Deadlines Loom as Christmas Draws Near

Your time to mail out those holiday presents is quickly running out. Today and Tuesday are expected to be the busiest days of the year with Monday being the busiest day for delivering packages. On Tuesday, customers will drop more than 801 million cards and letters into the mail for the U.S. Postal Service to deliver, which is about double the average daily volume of mail, according to the United States Postal Service. Tuesday, Dec. 20 is the last day to ship via First-Class mail. Wednesday, Dec. 21 is the last day to ship Priority Mail and Thursday is the last day to ship Express Mail.
