Humane Society Beyond Cat Capacity

The Nebraska Humane Society, like all shelters all across the country, is overflowing with felines. Every summer, the cats come pouring in faster than anyone can imagine. The shelter now hopes new incentives will encourage people to take a new friend home while helping them solve a crowding problem. To increase the number of cat adoptions, NHS is offering any cat older than five months at no charge. Adopters also have the choice of taking home two kittens younger than 5 months for $75 - the normal cost of adopting a single kitten. The Humane Society will match cats with owners based on personality and lifestyle. Potential owners can meet and play with the cat in a room to see if things will work out. Adoptable cats are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, tested for feline read more »

New Federal Guidelines Prohibit Sale, Donation of Old Cribs

Have an old crib you were planning to sell at a garage sale or give away to Goodwill? Think again. Last week it became illegal to sell or give away a crib that does not meet the new federal safety standards for baby cribs. The updated guidelines prohibit drop sides and also call for stronger slats, mattress supports, hardware and improved testing, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Even if your used crib does not have a drop-down side, it is still illegal to sell or donate the crib if it doesn’t meet the new standards. If you recently purchased a crib, check to be sure it is compliant with regulation 16 CFR 1219 for full-size cribs or 16 CFR 1220 for non-full-size cribs. Get Your Fireworks Kicks Tonight

Rally for Splash Pads Planned

The heat is on (finally) in Sarpy County. Cooling down at a local splash pad, a zero-depth aquatic play area with over-the-top-sprinklers, is a great way to spend those 100-degree days. It's not an option for Bellevue residents yet, but the Splash Pads for Bellevue committee is working to change that. A Splash Rally, the group's first official fund raiser, is set for July 12, 4-7 p.m. at Everett Park on Betz Road. Families are invited out to enjoy ice cream, sprinklers, water fun, fire trucks and D.A.R.E activities. People can find out more about the proposed splash pad and make a donation. The rainout date is July 13, 4-7 p.m. The goal of the Splash Pads for Bellevue Committee, a community-based group, is to raise money, work with the city and promote the addition of a read more »
