The Owl Ride, Omaha's nighttime bike ride to benefit the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities, returns for a second year on July 16 and you can save $10 per rider or $20 per family by registering online prior to July 15. Methodist Women’s Hospital Marks One Year of Service

Methodist Women’s Hospital at 192nd and West Dodge Road is marking its one-year anniversary today. The hospital, which was the first in the Midwest to be dedicated solely to women’s health, has given the Methodist Health System more space and more opportunities to provide key patient amenities, such as private rooms, said Sue Korth, Chief Operating Officer of Methodist Women’s Hospital. “Our ultimate goal is that we will be a one-stop shop for women,” Korth said. The hospital saw about 3,200 deliveries in the last year, and its delivery numbers are increasing. While Methodist Women’s Hospital is popular for labor and delivery, it also caters to women who have orthopedic and other health issues. La Vista Catches Baseball Fever

At least 300 baseball teams will take the field in La Vista over the next two weeks. The annual SlumpBuster Baseball Tournament which attracted more than 400 teams from 39 states including Hawaii this year slammed into Omaha June 16, kicking things off with a bonfire of wooden bats and a nationally-televised east-vs.-west all-star game for 13-and 14-year olds. Triple Crown Sports, the organizer of the SlumpBuster Tournament, planned to coincide with the College World Series, has reserved fields as far north as Blair, as far south as Nebraska City and as far west as Lincoln. Before the last pitch, teams will play on 46 diamonds in 10 cities. Parenting Magazine Ranks Omaha #8 Best Place to Raise a Family

Parenting Magazine recently announced their Top 100 Places to Live & Raise a Family and for the second year in a row, Omaha made the top ten. This year Omaha moved up to the eighth spot from the ninth spot we held last year. Cities were ranked based on the quality of schools, affordable homes, low crime rates, jobs, and parkland. Arts Council Initiates Photo Contest

This summer, a picture could be worth a thousand words, or $100. That's Best of Show for the Sarpy County Arts Council's first photography contest. Entries are being accepted now at Metro Area SAC Federal Credit Unions. Amateur photographers are invited to enter a maximum of five color photos in four categories: nature and scenic, pets and animals, people and travel. Adult and youth age categories are also available. Besides the best of show honor, first place will receive $50. Second and third place prize winners will take home ribbons. Students at Carriage Hill Elementary in Papillion have their own summer blog. It's about the books they read and what they think. It's also a way to possibly earn some great prizes in the fall. “We've had a lot of kids make a ton of progress in reading this year,” Carriage Hill Principal Kelcy Tapp said. “We know that if we don't get them to continue reading throughout the summer they won't maintain or continue that progress. The goal is to keep them reading.” Dawn Spurck, Carriage Hill's literary facilitator, created, organized and edits the blog. Students log in and fill out a short survey about each book they read. Following up on last year's wildly successful, the Bemis Underground opens its second $100 Art Sale downtown tonight. The hook is the name itself: $100 art. Real art by real artists at an unbelievable price. This year's sale features more than 170 works of art from a slew of national, regional and local artists. Word of advice, get there early. Last year a line snaked the length of the building in advance of the doors opening at 7 p.m. The Bemis Underground $100 Art Sale is June 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. and June 11 from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. Admission on Friday is $5 with all proceeds going to the Bemis Underground.
