Take Your Doggie for a Weekend Dip

Take a break from the August heat and hit the pool with your dog at Sunday's Doggie Dip at Lee Valley Pool, 10605 Charles St. The event, which is sponsored by Omaha Parks and Recreation and the Nebraska Humane Society, costs $5 per dog. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with swimming starting at 6 p.m. The main pool will be open to big dogs and their owners, while the kiddie pool will be available for small dogs and dogs who may need to warm up to the pool environment. Editor’s Pick: Kindergarten Traffic Training

The Omaha Police Department will host the 59th Annual Kindergarten Traffic Training at Westroads Mall Thursday, August 4th and Friday, August 5th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children will be formed into small groups. Each group will move through training stages escorted by uniformed police officers and firefighters. Training will last approximately 45 minutes, with new groups starting every 10-15 minutes. Once a group has completed all of the training stages, the children may leave with their parent/guardian. The training is provided at no cost to participants. New Pool May Be Back on Ballot

Swimming pool A bond issue for a new La Vista swimming pool and water park may be back on the ballot in November. The La Vista City Council is expected to move a step closer to putting the $8.5 million bond issue in the hands of voters in November. Aug. 2 the council is expected to vote on whether or not to ask staff to draft ballot language to that effect. According to the synopsis in the Council Meeting packet, available online, this issue came before voters in 2008 and was defeated by a mere 305 votes. The current pool, constructed in 1962, rehabilitated and reconstructed several times, continues to need updating. The La Vista City Council requested a second conceptual design of a $5 million pool. 2011 Gala Celebration The Papillion-LaVista Schools Foundation is preparing to celebrate another year of connecting schools and the community with Gala 2011. Omaha Police Seeking Community Feedback

The Omaha Police Department is asking citizens to complete a survey to share their opinions and attitudes about the city's police. The new survey available both online and in hard-copy form at each precinct until Aug. 31. English and Spanish versions are available. You can access the survey by visiting the department's Facebook page or by clicking the "OPD Survey" link on the Omaha Police Department website. Additionally, the police department will conduct random surveys in each precinct to get a broader representation of residents' viewpoints. Two Omaha business parks are offering employees access to their own weekly farmer's market. At 132nd and West Dodge Road, C&A Industries, First National Bank, Home Instead Senior Care and Lutz & Co. employees can now access a small farmer's market with produce from local grower Wenninghoff's every Wednesday through Aug. 31. Our Town Grant to Help Visually Document Sarpy County Land Use

Final installation vision A grant from the National Endowment for the Arts will help one local non-profit examine, explain and record the history of land use in Sarpy County and then share it with the community through a concluding exhibition. It might even help beautify and revitalize a shuttered section of 84th Street. The $50,000 Our Town Grant will support design analyses, community interviews and planning for an exhibition about historical land use and population trends in Sarpy County, said Anne Trumble, director of Emerging Terrain.
