Firefighters were called out around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday morning to fight flames at Elkhorn Lanes Bowling Alley, 3202 N. 204th St.. At noon on Thursday fire crews were still on the scene monitoring the site.
Longtime Elkhorn residents, no doubt, have fond memories of Husker Tailgate parties and Sunday morning eggs on the griddle at the cafe located inside the bowling alley.
"We closed early last night, around 9 p.m. because of the weather. Sometime later someone called 911. We came back at 3:30 a.m. and there was nothing we could do but watch the flames," said Lori Sempeck who along with her husband Steve have owned the bowling alley for years.
Bowling is the couple's blood. "Steve has always been a bowling fanatic. That's how we met," said Lori.
The building is a complete loss and according to Sempeck, "Nothing can be salvaged."
The couple have been the sole proprietors of the neighborhood hot-spot for more than a decade. They don't have any plans of letting a fire get them down.
"We love Elkhorn," Sempeck said. "There are lots of nice people. We will do bowling again. We will rebuild."

A shame when bad things happen to good people. Maybe the other, now vacant bowling alley should have gone up instead?? Best wishes to the Sempecks!
